The Reds have tread water in the first quarter of the 2014 season, but have now hit a difficult part of their schedule with 9 games against the Washington Nationals, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Reds faced the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals in Week 8.

Starting Pitcher Breakdowns for Week 7

Homer Bailey

For the Reds fans that follow the history of Homer Bailey, he does not do well against the St. Louis Cardinals. In his last start, he had left the game with the lead, but the bullpen blew the game, but was not credited with the loss. Bailey has gotten better in his starts against the Cardinals in the past 5 games and can see him finally hitting the right stride. Bailey won his start against the Cardinals on Friday night.

  • PER 9: 12.00 H/4.50 R/3.00 BB/6.00 SO

Mike LeakeNo leak in the starting rotation, Mike Leake has had himself another Quality Start in which he end up no decision, but the bullpen ended up winning the game for him on May 19th against the Washington Nationals. As for his National TV start, gave himself another Quality Start against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Offense has hit one of their spurts of not producing in RISP, so those are things as a team that will be worked on. Leake simply fell a victim to this situation.

Johnny Cueto

It was destined to happen one day, Johnny Cueto was beat. Cueto was beat badly that most numbers listed below are OUTLIERS to what Cueto does in a regular start. It’s human to have one of those starts, nonetheless, good start to the 2014 season.

  5. R RATE (15.96%)

Alfredo Simon

Thank god for the Big Pasta. Alfredo Simon is proven to be a valuable starting pitcher in the time of Mat Latos being on the Disabled List. I am a supporter of Simon staying in the rotation and eating up innings. No disrespect to Tony Cingrani, but he is not able to stay in longer for most games.

MAY 21ST-WASHINGTON NATIONALS

  • 7 IP/5 H/R/BB/6 SO/HR
  • BAA .192/ERA 1.29/WHIP 0.86
  • GRADE: 92.06% (A)

  • PER 9: 6.43 H/1.29 R/1.29 BB/7.71 SO/1.29 HR

Tony Cingrani

Cingrani’s audition for the 5th spot is in jeopardy. One thing that Cingrani has done is pitch 6 or more innings in 5 starts this season. That is one factor in keeping his starting job, but one thing that will lose his job is allowing too many runs. 3 or more runs is considered a fail for a Quality start and has done that in his last 2 starts. If Cingrani really wants that 5th spot, he has to pitch well in Arizona this week.
