Starting Pitcher Breakdowns for Week 6

Another rough outing for Homer Bailey. Bailey was rocked in one inning and exited the ballgame early in the 4th inning. Bailey will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals on May 23rd.

Mike LeakeFacing his hometown has treated Mike Leake well. Leake, a San Diego native, has pitched 16 innings in his last two starts against the Padres, but the Reds lost on home runs allowed by Aroldis Chapman in the 9th inning, Chase Headley provided the game winner on Tuesday night.

Johnny Cueto

MLB The Show was released this month and Johnny Cueto is absolutely putting up Video Game Numbers so far this 2014 season. Cueto pitched a beautiful game for an overwhelmed Padres team that ranks low in offense. If Cueto keeps it up in his next 3 starts, he will likely be Pitcher of the Month for the National League and should lock up an All-Star spot, that’s if Mike Matheny wants that option.

MAY 15TH-SAN DIEGO PADRES

  • 9.00 IP/3 H/2 BB/8 SO
  • BAA .100/WHIP 0.56
  • GRADE: 97.94% (A)
  • RATES: 10.34% H/6.90% BB/27.59% SO

Alfredo Simon

After a rough outing last week against the Colorado Rockies, Alfredo Simon has bounced back. Simon faced an old aged Phillies lineup and put up 7 strong innings before failing to get the last out with 2 men on base with tying run at the plate, Manny Parra got the Hold in that situation.

MAY 16TH-PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

  • 7.2 IP/5 H/BB/8 SO
  • BAA .179/WHIP 0.78
  • GRADE: 97.10% (A)
  • RATES: 16.67% H/3.33% BB/26.67% SO
  • PER 9: 5.87 H/1.17 BB/9.39 SO

Jeff Francis

As part of the doubleheader, the Reds use the 26 man roster, but Jeff Francis was not the 26 man, Nick Christiani was. The whole concept of doing this was to put Tony Cingrani on an extra day of rest. The San Diego Padres did not use a minor league pitcher for the twin-bill series. Following the game, Francis has been Designated For Assignment.

MAY 15TH-SAN DIEGO PADRES

  • 5 IP/5 H/3 R/4 SO/HR
  • BAA .250/ERA 5.40/WHIP 1.00
  • GRADE: 76.30% (C)
  • RATES: 25.00% H/15.00% R/20.00% SO/5.00% HR

Tony CingraniAs for stating the case of starting pitching, Tony Cingrani is not looking so good right now. The Sports Insights blog has covered which starting pitcher should return to the bullpen, Alfredo Simon or Tony Cingrani. One of the most important factors now is that Starting Pitching has become very important for this 2014 team and Cingrani can’t provide innings that are as long as Alfredo Simon. It will be interesting what Bryan Price will do with those two when Mat Latos returns to the starting rotation. Cingrani on average pitches 5.48 innings versus Simon’s 6.42, nearly one whole inning. Cingrani pitches 4.2-6.1 IP while Simon typically pitches 6-7.1 IP.
