Cincinnati Reds Week 5 Pitching Report

Originally 7 games this week for the Reds, the Reds managed to get 6 games in this week. The Reds started their week with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs were originally suppose to come in for a 3 game series, but rain postponed the first game. The series was a 2 game series and the makeup date will be announced later in the season. Following the Cubs series, the Reds faced the 1st place Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers had a very hot April going 20-8, but start May with a 1-3 record. Reds managed to win 4 games this week.

Starting Pitcher Breakdowns for Week 5

Tony Cingrani

Maybe Tony Cingrani has found his kryptonite of a team, the Chicago Cubs. Cingrani in his last 3 starts has not done well against this team and his latest performance has led him to the Disabled List. Cingrani on the DL retroactive to May 1st and will be back no later than May 16th. The Reds schedule has two days off in a week with the 2 game series to Boston and faced the Colorado Rockies the next week. Another off day the following week should put him in the back end of the rotation. One thing to question is who returns to the bullpen, Cingrani or Alfredo Simon. The return to the bullpen is about when Mat Latos returns to the team in 100% condition.

APRIL 30TH-CHICAGO CUBS

  • 4 IP/6 H/3 R/2 BB/2 SO/HR
  • BAA .33/ERA 6.75/WHIP 2.00

  • PER 9: 13.50 H/6.75 R/4.50 BB/4.50 SO/2.25 HR

Homer Bailey

Batman’s back, or something like that. The doppelganger of Homer Bailey had a very ROUGH April, but put that in the past against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night. Bailey pitched 8 innings of baseball, which helped a taxed bullpen. Homer Bailey is back and that is something that the Reds wanted to see desperately. Now that Cingrani is on the disabled list, Bailey will taking his spot in the rotation and playing the first game in Boston, which does nothing to his resting schedule.

MAY 1ST-MILWAUKEE BREWERS

  • 8 IP/8 H/3 R/BB/4 SO
  • BAA .250/ERA 3.38/WHIP 1.13
  • GRADE: 83.33% (B)
  • RATES: 25.00% H/9.38% R/3.13% BB/12.50% SO
  • PER 9: 9.00 H/3.38 R/1.13 BB/4.50 SO

Mike LeakeMike Leake had a VERY GOOD START, but the offense didn’t help his cause. Leake faced Wily Peralta, who had struggled against the Reds offense, but managed to keep them at bay. Leake will pitch Wednesday at Fenway Park, originally supposed to pitch the following week with two days off on a Friday against the Colorado Rockies

MAY 2ND-MILWAUKEE BREWERS

  • 8 IP/7 H/2 R/2 BB/5 SO
  • BAA .226/ERA 2.25/WHIP 1.13
  • GRADE: 87.50% (B)
  • RATES: 22.58% H/6.45% R/6.45% BB/16.13% SO
  • PER 9: 7.88 H/2.25 R/2.25 BB/5.63 SO

Johnny Cueto

So it’s OK to have an off night. For Johnny Cueto, his off night was allowing 2 runs. Cueto allowed 2 runs in 3 of 7 starts this season, but managed to pitch 8 innings and use less bullpen for the Milwaukee series. Cueto will get lots of rest this week and pitch one game against the Colorado Rockies.

MAY 3RD-MILWAUKEE BREWERS

  • 8 IP/3 H/2 R/BB/10 SO/2 HR
  • BAA .111/ERA 2.25/WHIP 0.50
  • GRADE: 89.81% (B)
  • RATES: 10.71% H/7.14% R/3.57% BB/35.71% SO/7.14% HR
  • PER 9: 3.38 H/2.25 R/1.13 BB/11.25 SO/2.25 HR

Alfredo Simon

As Alfredo Simon keeps being the spot starter for Mat Latos, it’s a lot harder for him not to be back in the bullpen. Simon keeps up eating innings and allowing not many runs to score this season. Simon managed to pitch 2 games this week and pulled 13 innings out of 19 in his efforts this week. Allowing only 5 runs in the week against the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers.
