What a game last night for both Homer Bailey and Michael Wacha. Bailey has found one of the Cardinals’ weakness in the off speed breaking pitches, he throw that pitch at least 60% of the time and that led to strikeouts for Pizza last night as well, Bailey had 8 strikeouts and Reds bullpen had 4 to end the night.
As for the pitchers duel, both Michael Wacha and Homer Bailey were at their best.
Homer Bailey last two starts (8/28 and 9/3): 14 1/3 IP, 7 H, 3 BB & 15 SO with a 0.00 ERA and 0.70 WHIP, as for the season, 24 2/3 IP, 25 H, 11 ER, 7 BB, 20 SO & 4 HR with a 4.01 ERA and 1.30 WHIP
Michael Wacha only had two starts against the Reds this season, both on days Bailey started, and had 10 IP, 6 G, 3 BB & 10 SO with a 0.00 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. I considered Adam Wainwright not to start against Reds in the one game playoff against Reds, if it happens, but Michael Wacha is a candidate to start, as well as Homer Bailey and Mat Latos.
Now for the 7th inning of last night’s game, welcome to the Big Show, Billy Hamilton!
Billy Hamilton, one of the All-Stars in this years Futures Game, made his debut and was put in great pressure, and that he did with this video.
Now that is sweet to have him running on that play with the best catcher to throw out base runners, Molina was not satisfied and had a grin when putting the mask on. Will that be a normal thing to do in September? Maybe, if the Game is on the line.
For the bullpen, that was great pitching done by Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman, it was good to see that Chapman had no rust and acted like it was no big deal with nasty sliders and 103 MPH 4-seam fastballs.
As for what I’ve seen from Cardinals beat writers, they pointed out to attendance being sub par for a big series, my only thought is that it is school night and no promotion was handed out that night, maybe the fans are willing to come out, but only if it is worth their time and money.
Shelby Miller: 6 IP, 3 H, HR, 3 R, 5 BB, 10 SO & HBP
Bronson Arroyo: 6 IP, 8 H, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, BB & 3 SO
Things to Consider:
- Shelby Miller has the best chance to win this game for the Cardinals tonight, Reds hitter have to be aggressive tonight since he has a 2.45 ERA against the Reds, but has a 5.40 ERA at Great American Ballpark
- Bronson Arroyo has been a Reds relief if they lose before his start, now he needs to fix the trend of winning after the Reds win before him, see August 30th.
- Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Pirates on having a winning season for the first time since 1992, all fans around MLB are glad that you have ended your losing streak season.
